MELFA is a voice-enabled web application running on mobile devices aimed at people with reading and/or language comprehension difficulties in South Africa.

The aim is to provide users who experience reading difficulties and second language users access to multimodal learning material on a mobile platform.

Main features of the system:
- All text can be listened to in English and Xhosa.
- Complex terms can be translated between English and Xhosa.

By voice enabled application we imply that speech is integrated with visual interfaces to provide a medium concurrent to text and graphics for users with low literacy and second language speakers rather than alternative to text for blind or disabled.

The tool should increase accessibility to learning material by providing means for non-literates/semi-literates and people with language comprehension difficulties to make use of text material.
Hence the overall goal is to provide with a supporting tool to these users.
